As this was my first quilt I had the help of various books, blogs and internet photos. I fell in love with the square in square pattern and started examining the pattern closely.
To get started I selected a collection of fat quarters by Michael Miller, Bloom and Bloom v 2.0. I wanted a baby sized quilt so i calculated an approximate number of blocks i would need. Adjusting the border and binding to come up with the finished quilt size that i wanted.
I stated my cutting by cutting the fat quarters into 5" stripes, then I cut 4 5" x 5" squares out of one of the stripes. After that I cut the remaining strips in half making the strips 2 1/2 inches wide. Then i cut the strips down to make the sides, making them 5" x 2 1/2 and 9 x 2 1/2.
Then I started laying them all out so that i would not have any two blocks alike.
This quilt went together fairly easily. In hind site, i might now have chosen this as my first quilt.
I purchased two classes from Craftsy to help me get the basics down. When i got stuck I watched that section of the class again (and again!!) until i was able to replicate the task.
All in all i am pleased with the result and will make this again. As this was my first quilt I had the help of various books, blogs and internet photos. I fell in love with the square in square pattern and started examining the pattern closely.
