I cut the squares 4.5 inches. A little tip for the rick rack. I used steam a seam (1/4 strips) on the back of the rick rack and ironed in place before sewing the binding to the front since the rick rack is small it was a little cumbersome to hold in place while trying to sew the binding. I used the backing fabric as a binding.

What size are your squares. I think this looks like something I would like to make as small gifts, maybe complete with a candle.

I just love the use of rick-rack in your project. I buy vintage rick-rack at garage sales, and can't wait to grab some out of my stash to start a candle mat of my own. Thanks for the inspiration!

I kinda went on a whim b/c I knew I wanted to used rick rack but didn't want to sew right on it showing the stitching so I incorporated it in the binding. I was pleased how it came out. I'm thinking I may use the super large rick rack in the same sort of way on a quilt. I think that would look super cute. Hope to see you post a picture of your candle mat when you are done! Glad I can inspire.
