Instructions

This is reverse applique, similar to the technigue used to made molas by Kuna women in the San Blas islands. This is much simpler than a mola, howerever, just two layers. I used a photo of my niece's dog as a pattern. .

Difficulty:

Category: Quilting

Type of item: Functional

For: Home

Style: Ethnic

Materials

Cotton fabric

What was your inspiration?

This was made for my niece's wedding quilt. Many people contributed blocks that had some meaning to the couple. I made Sparky because this dog was adopted by my sister after my parents passed away and Megan spent a lot of time training the dog.

What are you most proud of?

I think I captured the "look."

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

Look at molas on line. They are beautiful.

I didn't post instructions because I made it up as I went along. If you google "reverse applique" you should find some ideas.

i just saw this on my fb page, i have about 18 months before i need to make my youngest grand daughter her 'big girl' quilt, she is quite attached to our black lab, Jazzie, you've inspired me to give this a try and find a place for it somewhere on her quilt- so talented!!

If there are instructions I sure can't find them. I've clicked on the picture and on Sparky and Oleo and nothing helpful.

Here is a link to some photos of molas, They are elaborate reverse applique panels that are turned into blouses that the women in SanBlas Islands of Panama wear. I went there on a tour to learn how to do this and meet some of the women who do this work http://www.panart.com/mola_gallery.htm

To make Sparky I used a photo of the dog and simplified it.
