Category: Sewing

Type of item: Accessory

For: Women

Style: Romantic, Classic, Traditional, Retro / Vintage, Victorian / Steampunk

Materials

Vintage Rhinestone Brooch, Old Satin Fabric from my old Wedding Gown, New Crepe Back Satin & New Organza & Lace Trim w/ Pearl Seed Beads

What was your inspiration?

My son's wedding. This was a gift for his bride.

What are you most proud of?

The fact that I had the gumption to actually cut a 30" x 3" piece of satin fabric straight up the seam of my old wedding gown! This was one of the satin pieces I made this garter with. I think I was sweating when I cut my old wedding gown.

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

Make it meaningful as this is a keepsake for a bride. Choose vintage notions, like the blue vintage brooch on the garter I made. It provided the something blue for the garter while the old satin from my wedding gown provided the something old (and maybe the borrowed, too!).
