Basic Finnish sock »

Difficulty:

Category: Knitting

Type of item: Clothing

For: Unisex

Style: Casual

Materials

various yarns, some purpose bought, some accidental finds here and there.

What was your inspiration?

I asked my friends on FB what to do next, and since then I've knitted 8 pairs. I think I'm a little bored with big projects, and there seems to be more people coming and asking for a pair as soon as I get a pair finished. What makes this so easy is that I can easily finish a pair in one week by just taking the public transportation to work.

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

Socks are such an easy project that'll bring tremendeous joy to your friends. Make a few in a row so you'll get the pattern engraved in your head, so as long as you have DP needles and some yarn, you can always spin out a pair in no time at all!

I've now tried repeatedly to post the written instructions on the site, and it only gives me an error message. I'm sorry, I don't know how to get the pattern to you.

You make it sound so easy, I guess I'll have to bite the bullet and try. Have you been knitting long?

Since I was 7 years old....or earlier. It is part of elementary school education even today in Finland. I just happen to really like it, and both my grandmothers were teachers: one elementary, the other handicrafts. Strangely enough, my mom doesn't know how to do any of this stuff, so I guess I do enough for the both of us.

I would like the free pattern but there is no link in which to get it. Checked with customer service and they suggested I make a comment and ask for the free pattern. Please correct this error so that we may be able to download the pattern, thanks.

Hi grannieb, I think you kinda missed the little note about me not having a pattern, this is how I was taught to make socks, I don't ever follow a pattern on socks (or mittens, for that matter). I will try to translate my knowledge on paper for you later today, but as a fair warning to you: I don't knit like an american. You twist and twirl the yarn in a very odd way to me and more than anything, the direction in which the yarn enters the work is completely counterintuitive to me. I'll do my best to make it understandable to you, but in the long run perhaps if you check back, I'll make a little photo diary for you on my craftsy page to make it more understandable. I'll message you again once I get to do these things for you.
