Multi-colored Soap

Instructions

If you think about wanting to make soap, BE SURE and watch videos and read books to learn the safety procedures and rules for doing so. Lye is dangerous in the wrong hands or places. It MUST be respected and used properly. The heat from hot-process soap can burn you like hot wax. Do not try to make soap without knowing how to be safe...I cannot stress this enough.

Difficulty:

Category: Home & Garden

Type of item: Functional

For: Home

Style: Mod, Funky, Whimsical

Materials

Various fatty oils, lye, soaping equipment, safety equipment(goggles, gloves), colorants, fragrance oils.

What was your inspiration?

To attempt making some 'swirly' soap but I don't think I succeeded. I used the Hot Process Method and it didn't stay pourable long enough for me to design it like I wanted to.

What are you most proud of?

The colors have a Southwestern look to them.

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

READ, READ, READ all safety procedures and get all the safety equipment necessary for making soap. You can also watch videos but a lot of them don't show their faces so you can't see if they are wearing a mask. Lye, when stirred into the water gives off fumes that gag you. It can also burn your skin. Proper clothing must be worn, i.e., long sleeves, proper shoes(not barefooted or flip flops), etc. Please, by all means, feel free to make your own soap but do get the safety part down first.

You may not have achieved swirls, but the soap has a lovely marbled effect. The colors really do have a southwestern look and they take me straight back to my mother's living room in the early 1960s. All of those oranges, turquoises, and browns were the decorating rage at the time and now those colors seem to be coming back.

I finally got my mold (neighbor built it for me) to do the correct method for peacock swirls. I made some last night and in my excitement of doing cold-process for the first time, I totally forgot to put the fragrance in it. Mad at me, but maybe someone who is allergic can use it. I cannot cut it until its been in the mold for 24 hours, so I'll be posting when it come out. Very excited even if I did mess up. Can't wait to see the results.
