Make It
This project was made from an independent Craftsy designer's pattern:
Favorite applique skirt, for girls 2 to5 »
Difficulty:
Category: Sewing
Type of item: Clothing
For: Girls
Style: Whimsical, Funky, Cute
Materials
I used fabric from my stash or up-cycled sheets and pillow-covers, and cut one of the panels in a girls' t-shirt with a pretty motif. I also cut the appliqu shapes in various fabrics.
What was your inspiration?
I let my niece choose the fabrics she liked. Mostly pale pinks... not very bold, and this skirts usually works with a lot of contrast between each panel. So I chose plum edgings, and yellow thread. but still it didn't look perfect (kept me awake during the night cause it wasn't right).
So, the next day we worked on adding a "removable reversible pocket": 2 sides, each with a different fabric and appliqus, and with side loops to button it up on the skirt.
She now can wear it 3 ways: without the pocket (with a cute white kitten), OR with the wild green/black kitten side of the pocket, OR with the softer russian dolls side of the pocket.
Oh, and the pocket can also be used as a cute little bag. :-)
What are you most proud of?
the pocket :-)
What advice would you give someone starting this project?
Go bold !! Follow your wildest instincts and choose contrasting panels and fabrics, that's what will make your skirt really one-of-a-kind :-)
