Category: Quilting

Type of item: Home Decor

For: Charity

Style: Cute, Whimsical, Funky

Materials

Cotton

What was your inspiration?

My husband's roots, Sioux City Iowa.... and his family still farming.
I've tried free-hand quilting after taking Craftsy classes from: Wendy Butler Berns and Ann Petersen who encouraged me by their demonstrating to attack my sunflowers free-hand and the contours of the tractors.
It was fun, not perfect. I've used the Roxanne Glue Baste it instead of pinning the raw edge pieces and had to wash the quilt to dissolve the glue so it shrunk a little (reason of the few wrinkles and loose threads).
I am happy with the results, I had only 4 tractor blocks and needed certain dimensions for the Project Linus organization so I've added the sunflowers.

What are you most proud of?

I've quilted the sunflowers like crazy.... and could do it. So happy!

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

You can do it, wear special gloves to have a better grip with the material, and be patient, not too fast, not too slow... you will succeed even if it is not perfect, like the exact same size of stitches... It is okay!
Try! and Enjoy!
What a pleasure to have done a project from A to B a little more complicated than before.

You will see Zaza, quilting is addicting. And I make quilt for a charity association, it is fun to make blankets for children in need of comfort. I can do so many more quilts this way and try new design of free hand quilting. There are a lots of classes with craftsy about free hand quilting. It is easier to first do it following a line or design. You will do it, you will see and it will amaze you. Have confidence!

It looks really great - all that free motion on the sunflowers looks interesting - I have only had one free motion lesson and I wouldn't attempt to do it on a quilt yet - good on your - I couldn't work with gloves but found it easier using a product called "Supreme Slider" which you put over your sole plate and under the quilt - you just have to wash the backing of the slider after you have done the quilt. I do hope one day I can do a quilt like you have - great that it represents your husband's roots. Well done

Thanks a lot, Beth. I will be waiting for your first quilted project. Which class did you get? In fact I have a slider that a friend gave me but I don't think it helps that much. and I always forget to put it on the machine sole, it has just a little hole for the needle well mine has several since it had moved while using it on other projects.

HI Sylvie - I did my lesson at the local patchwork store - it will be quite a while before I do a free motion quilt - will stick to stitch in the ditch at the moment - I need some time to sit down and really get the feel of my machine running at speed to get the correct tension. My slider sorts of sticks to the sole plate and has a hole for the needle well. At the moment I am still putting together the quilt from the Magical Jelly Roll course at Craftsy - need time to pin the layers together - it seems I need time to do a lot of things at the moment!!!

I am doing the Jacob's Ladder one Sylvie - it is in my gallery - just got to put the layers together then quilt. I am hoping once I finish this one to do the Chainsaw one next - have some of the material. I need to get the Jacob's Ladder one done as a Christmas present for a family member.

I've misspelled several words, I meant that Wendy and Ann encouraged me with their demonstrations. And that I did finish this project from A to Z. Be kind I did not iron the quilt, I was too eager to see if the glue went off and it did, so there is frayed threads and it does not look its best.
