What was your inspiration?
A friend has a Shih tzu who likes the dog park. She wanted a rain-coat that would allow her to take the dog to the park during misty or rainy weather and would provide a way to keep the dog's hair dry.
What are you most proud of?
The hat. There was no pattern available for the hat, so I designed it after an infants hat. I drew out the pattern pieces to scale, then cut out and constructed the 'hat' in muslin. Then made adjustments to the muslin and used the final adjusted muslin as a pattern for the hat.
What advice would you give someone starting this project?
Vinyl is not the easiest to sew on due to it's propensity to cause 'drag' between the vinyl and the throat plate of the sewing machine. Consequently, in addition to cutting the construction pieces out of vinyl, I also 2 pieces of tissue paper (top and bottom) in the shape of each pattern piece. Then I sandwiched the fabric between the tissue on both sides, sewed the seams, and removed the tissue after sewing.
