i have just bought a sewing machine and have no idea what the bias or the grain are. oh dear.

Lol. We all started the same way. On the grain means that you cut your fabric straight up and down or straight across. Bias means that you cut your fabric on the diagonal (which we try to stay away from unless you need your fabric to stretch, which we don't usually want). It won't be long before you're tossing around sewing terms like a pro!! Have fun - that's the most important thing. :)
