Learn It

This project was made as part of a Craftsy course:
Shoot It! A Product Photography Primer »

Instructions

make sure model/daughter is in an upbeat mood first!

Difficulty:

Category: Other

Type of item: Clothing

For: Women

Style: Cute, Romantic, Casual, Retro / Vintage, Classic

Materials

Canon 60D, plus a bit of Lightroom editing

What was your inspiration?

Jump right in and try a whole photoshoot; also trying to learn hubby's fancypants camera. I wanted to tell a story and put the sweater in context - cool girl lingering at the cafe after work? Something like that.

What are you most proud of?

Getting that golden light - but alot of the shots (not posted here) missed it, I think because of my and the model's positioning. It was about an hour before sunset, and slightly earlier might have been even better. I tried several things from the class, including lead room, turtlehead, light halo, body positioning - mostly composition things. Need to work on some technical-camera things more.

Beautiful model and sweater. I love the style and the color. Your photos are very appealing; I, too, would like to have that sweater.

Thanks! That's my teenager; I bribe her to model with shopping.

These are gorgeous, Jennifer -- really golden and romantic, which seems so well-suited to the garment. It's funny how the turtle head only looks unnatural when you call attention to it. My favorites are "look down" and "cuff and ruffle detail." They make me want to wear that sweater.

Thanks, Elizabeth! I like "look down" too, but I think I need to tweak the color a little, maybe up the purple saturation of the sweater a tiny bit. Not sure I like the model's neck in that one, but I love the way the ruffle is cascading.

I'm going to add my vote to the 'look down' one too for the hero. The other possible one has a shadow in the lower corner that while adding to the mood, distracts from the garment. I love the lead room one too and might suggest warming up the tone on that one a little to better match the others. Great shoot overall! (The sweater is gorgeous too!)

Thanks, Caro! I guess that shadow IS a bit weird and moody for the main photo. I might try again, and improve the ISO while I'm at it.
