For this hat, I used two of the tricks that Stephanie teaches in the circular knit lab course. I found it easiest to cast on the tail (you start with the tail stump) using magic loop and then after a few rows switching to two circular needles. Don't be afraid to add or take away rows here and there. In some areas the instructions are a bit fuzzy, so don't be afraid to improvise.
