What materials did you use? Pre-quilted fabric (1 yard will yield a few mats depending on the size of your machine), double fold binding to match, sewing thread.

What are you most proud of? Realizing I could save so much time buying pretty pre-quilted fabric! I always wondered what people used it for and now I know it's for projects like this.

What advice would you give someone starting this project? When purchasing pre-quilted fabric use a coupon! It is waaaay too expensive trying to buy it at the regular price (normally $19.99) so use a 50% off coupon and get a yard for $10. You can make two or three mats and even sell one to your friends! Some people prefer to just fold up the bottom portion where the pocket goes so you don't have to put binding all the way around. It may also be a good idea to put some non-skid cabinet liner on the bottom of the mat to keep it from moving around when you lift up your sewing machine.

Great idea!! Except I'm going to attach it to the arm of my recliner so I can get some of the stuff off the table. But you know when you make one the 2nd is easier so I'll make one for the sewing machine also. And maybe the couch.......

Great idea for the recliner. I made an arm organizer for the couch and bed out of cloth place mats I get on sale. I attached two mats together, then flipped one end to the size I wanted for the TV/DVD/Ceiling Fan Widgets and sewed pockets for those items. Works great for kids who have a Wii/PlayStation/XBox to keep their widgets in : )
