Hand-Spun Wool that was 30-60 years old

What was your inspiration?

My grandmother passed away in 2002. After all these years, I found a box of wool that she used to make sweaters, mittens, hats, etc. I don't know exactly how old the yarn is, but I know that she knitted these items for many years. I'm guessing this span cover 30-60 years. I needed to find a way to honor her memory; something that was memorable and old fashioned. I remembered hearing stories about how people made sock monkeys as toys for children during the Depression years. I had enough of this old wool to knit seven sock monkeys for my children and their children. These sock monkeys are made with love in memory of my wonderful grandmother.

What are you most proud of?

I love it that each monkey has its own personality. They were each made with the same pattern, but I used different colors, and spaced the eyes differently. Their clothing gave them distinct personalities. Each of my grandchildren and children went directly to the monkey they prefered. It was a very special moment.

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

Have fun with it!

Thank you so much! I wish I had video taped the expressions of my grandchildren when they each selected their preferred monkey. It was priceless! It would have brought happy tears to my grandmother's eyes.
