What materials did you use? My Dad's old shirts - the ones that were too stained or worn to donate to charity. I added the red cotton for contrast and used half a double duvet cover for the backing.

What are you most proud of? This is the biggest quilt I have made so far - I am proud of that and relieved I could quilt it on my domestic machine. ;-)

What advice would you give someone starting this project? There is a really neat way of working out the pattern in the book. Some of these shirts were not 100% cotton, making them harder to sew, either because they were slippery or frayed more. Unless there are sentimental reasons, I'd recommend sticking with cotton.

What a fabulous quilt! Kudos for upcycling materials and adding the red for a little zing.

Thanks! When I gave it to my Dad my parents were looking at the fabric and commenting on the shirt, where it had come from, what Dad had looked like in it... it was quite sweet. :-)

I fell in love with the concept of the quilt as art in the late '60s when I saw an exhibit on American quilts at the MMA in NYC. Since then I have remained appreciative of the art of quilt-making which can be "uppity" and possess great beauty of design, pattern, color and craftsmanship without sacrificing "utility."
