Difficulty:

Category: Quilting

Type of item: Functional

For: Home

Style: Traditional, Funky

Materials

Cotton fabric- mostly quilting fabrics from various places. I used 3 strands of 6 strand embroidery cotton to hand quilt most of the quilt.

What was your inspiration?

I wanted to choose a traditional block for my turn in the bee, keeping the traditional red square centre, but wanted there to be some opportunity for the members to choose how they put the fabric together - and log cabins are pretty stress-free to put together!

Forgive all the hair - I was half way through quilting when I went into hospital for surgery, I think my dog took solace rolling around the quilt while I was away....

What are you most proud of?

I was worried that the quilt might end up either too 'flat' and boring, as I chose not to use a strong light/dark contrast, or too 'jumbled' with all the different fabrics - I was worried when I looked at the blocks, but altogether I am pleased with it! I love mostly white quilts, but it just wouldn't have been a practical option for my bed, with a hairy dog and cat.

I machine quilted diagonal lines across the quilt, then hand quilted the strips individually with embroidery thread and big stitches in different colours - I thought it would be too big a job, but I enjoyed it and it was easier than getting such a large quilt through my machine.

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

The blocks are easy to put together and can be arranged in many different ways. Be careful with the bee you join - it took over 6 months for me to get some of the blocks back, and some didn't get made or sent at all and i lost the fabric :-(

Thank-you, I finished it just after I had surgery and was waiting for the results, this quilt provided so much comfort at that time. :-)

Thank-you! I sleep under it every night, I love it - I don't think it has photographed very well though.
