Difficulty:

Category: Cake Decorating

Type of item: Food

For: Other

Style: Formal / Bridal, Whimsical

Materials

Cake, Fondant, Sugarpaste, various cutting, embossing and crafting tools.

What was your inspiration?

The Bride and Groom wanted a separate groom's cake to feed their guests. They both were photography majors at Ohio University and thought the idea of having their specific cameras sculpted into cake would be fun and impress their guests.

What are you most proud of?

I was told by the mother of the bride as well as the bride herself that guests thought the cameras were real until they were told otherwise or until they got right up close to them.

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

The tools are essential to detailing the fondant. Chilling the cake as you go through the steps is critical as well.

Amazing detail! I can't imagine how long it took you to do this. They really do look real. The photos you put on the displays were a great touch, too!

No. I just had a request from a Bride to sculpt a groom's cake into the shapes of the bride and groom's cameras. She provided pics of the details of their cameras and their special lenses. Then I just free-handed the sculpting and cut out the details by eyeing them. No patterns. But I did make a blog to guide others with the process since I could not find anything online about how to sculpt a camera cake.
