Scrap busting coasters

Instructions

OK here are some simple instructions for this project. Sew assorted strips that are between 1 and 2 inches wide together into groups that are at least 3.5 inches square. Take 2 of the pieces and sew them together so that the strips in one square are perpendicular to the other. Repeat. Now take the 2 resulting pieces and sew them together. Using a small bowl (I used on that was 5 inches across), ...

Cotton scraps from my stash

What was your inspiration?

I saw a similar project in the book 'Fresh Quilting' by Malka Dubrawsky. I have lots of scraps, like most quilters, so decided to get rid of a few.

What are you most proud of?

Making the bias binding - I've bound lots of quilts but never with bias.

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

Don't cut up yardage for these -it's amazing how little a scrap can be and still be used.

Hi there, Glad you like the coasters. My short version instructions are at the top but if you want the full meal deal with photos etc, try and get ahold of Malka Dubrawsky's book 'Fresh Design'. I actually borrowed it from the library. Good luck and have fun!

I made something similar for Christmas for my friends. I first bought mugs and then made the coasters (or mug rugs as they were called in the pattern I used) to match the colors in the mugs.

Oddly enough, I tried something like this around Christmas. Wanted to give them as a gift. But my piece came out all wavy after I sewed the sandwich together with the spiral pattern. Couldn't even iron it flat. I just used a regular sewing machine. Did you free motion the spiral?
CanadianQuilter on craftsy.com
Feb 05, 2012   Flag as inappropriate
Yes, I took the feed dogs down and used a darning foot. It isn't perfect but I like the sense of movement the spirals give the placemats.

Using a small bowl (I used on that was 5 inches across), cut the resulting piece into a circle. Create a quilt sandwich with a backing fabric and batting. Machine quite in a spiral. For the binding, cut bias strips that are about 20 inches long and 1.5 inches wide. Sew a strip onto the coaster making a mitered connection where the ends join. Wrap the strip around to the back, turn under 1/4" and either hand stitch or machine stitch with a zig zag stitch. I used the machine. Total time to complete: about 2 hours.
