I have seen this zipper in a magazine and loved it.I didn't follow the pattern exactly, because the dark orange zipper I have is shorter than needed. But it is the same color as one of the squares.
So I adapted the pattern a little bit.:)
The main idea for checked fabric is as in the original pattern.
