The Couture Dress »

Instructions

This is my muslin. I did some flat paper alterations to the pattern size 20. Had my first fitting Monday had minor changes to the front neckline and had to drop the bodice length. 5 of an inch. Second fitting today perfect. Now on to Fashion fabric. After I got the fashion fabric and underling all together and basted made some more alterations on the armholes and bodice front sides.

Difficulty:

Category: Sewing

Type of item: Clothing

For: Plus-sized

Style: Classic

Materials

Muslin, tracing paper, silk thread. silk organza,

What was your inspiration?

Susan Khalje is my inspiration. Her teaching style is very relaxed and makes you feel like it's two friends sharing a project.

What are you most proud of?

That I am slowing down and enjoying the Couture process.

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

Watch the entire video. Downloads class materials, gather all you need for your couture dress then work along with Susan. Check that your fashion fabric, underling and lining will work together. Post a questions and confirm with Susan before you start to cut. I did not and I ended cutting a stretch taffetta that just dosen't work with silk organza underlining. So I am thinking about using linen with the silk organza underlining.

Like how' you're using a contrasting fabric for the center piece. That will look really cool.

Thank you Susan. I hope it added a new flair kind of a color block feel and help to create a smaller silhouette

Effie Bee see you online with me doing the Sassy Blouse. How is that project going? Did you do the stitiching course? Would you recommend?

Once I completed my stay stitching on the top edge of the midriff band I noticed that my band looked thinner. When I check to my muslin I noticed that things had shifted and changed. I then took chalk and created a NEW line. I then rebasted did my seam line tracings removed the old tracings and stay stitchings. Looks better!

Working on the stay stitching on my bodice today. Hope to get the band onto the bodice all ready to attach to the skirt which is done. Maybe I can get it all together into one piece to take to my class Monday for review.

I'm jealous that you have a sewing teacher to help you with the fitting process! Would you be willing to post a picture of the muslin on you after you've done your alterations? I want to see what a correctly fitted version of this dress looks like on someone, and you seem to be of a similar size to me.

Muslin looks great--I have not started yet. Do you have a fitting friend or do you use a dress form?

I am taking a sewing class so I bring it to class and have fitted by instructor. I do have a dress form but find a better fit when I use myself.

Thanks for the comment on my muslin. Yours looks nice too! I hope to make that pattern next - the one I'm working on in Susan's class, which I love!! , is much simpler. Looking forward to seeing your results :)
