Inspired Modern Quilts: 7 Small Projects With Big Style »
Instructions
Because I limited myself to my stash, I didn't end up with as modern a feel as I hoped - don't be afraid to switch out fabrics multiple times if its not quite what you want.Difficulty:
Category: Quilting
Type of item: Functional
For: Home
Style: Casual
Materials
Cotton flannels and madras - all from my stash. 80/20 batting - just using up leftovers
What was your inspiration?
I was trying to multitask! I needed a housewarming gift for a friend who just bought a cabin in the mountains, plus I wanted to make something for 2 Craftsy classes, this one and Angela Walters machine quilting negative space. My budget was tight at the time so I had to use what I had in my stash.
What are you most proud of?
I fought hard to try to keep this quilt from looking too country. I added an asymmetrical border, but it still looked super Blah to me. I thought it was kind of cliche to add one unique square, but when I tried it I liked it anyway and just left it. The quilting is pretty dense and although it may not exactly compliment this quilt well, I tried out different ideas and learned things that I will definitely be using in the future.
What advice would you give someone starting this project?
Have fun with it! I found it useful to walk away from it several times during the layout phase so I could look at it with fresh eyes. I also made my squares slightly larger so I would have a generous lap sized quilt.
