Sassy Librarian

Learn It

This project was made as part of a Craftsy course:
Sassy Librarian Blouse »

Difficulty:

Category: Sewing

Type of item: Clothing

For: Women

Style: Retro / Vintage, Classic

Materials

100% cotton

What was your inspiration?

I'm still new to sewing, so this was my first blouse. I loved the retro styling and wanted a shirt I could wear to work or out on the town.

What are you most proud of?

Making a muslin and continuing to learn how to alter patterns and garments to get the right fit (shortening the front and back waist, decreasing the fullness in the bust).

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

I am petite with a short waist, so making a muslin proved to be very helpful. I used 100% cotton, but now I feel inspired to make it out of other fabrics as well. I decided not to have contrasting fabric on the sleeve bands or bow so that the shirt looked a little more dressy and work appropriate and I'm happy with the results. Also, I purchased vintage pearl buttons which I think stand out a bit more with the simple fabric choice.

Thank you! They are my first garments (following the standard pillow case, wallet and bag I made in a beginning sewing class).

The button really adds to the blouse. Looks like you have been sewing for years. Good for you making a muslin, it saves the real fabric and gives you a chance to try different things. Well done! I am also new to sewing, just started this last 6 months due to help from craftsy.com. What a wealth of information.

Thanks! Yes, the muslin was essential. I made one simple dress recently without a muslin and felt very insecure :) Good luck with your sewing, I've found his platform very helpful.
