I have this compulsion to make my swatches something "useful", so couldn't resist using my leftover cotton worsted. I used whip stitch on two sides, and mattress on the other two -- will practice herringbone on something that won't take such a beating! (Like you, Franklin, I love to see a seam "coming together"... ) I also had to play around with corners -- in this case, clearly NOT heirloom quality, I used short rows to see if I could make the edging turn the corner. It worked, except for the start and finish.
