Share a little about the materials, processes and techniques used to create this piece. Acrylic paint on large canvas, 30" x 40". I rarely paint what is in front of me, I prefer to take an inspiration and combine it with my imagination to be presented in a way that hopefully expresses a feeling. In this particular piece, I have attempted to express the joy and vibrancy of Spring along with a feeling of renewal. I am not a trained artist, so my techniques are mostly trial and error. For this piece, I studied many photographs of poppies, paying special attention to the folds of the petals, noting the way the light played off of them. I started with a very rough sketch of the flowers and then began to paint. This is not an attempt at realism, but hopefully there is enough of a nod to what a poppy actually looks like that the subject is recognizable. Although I have a great appreciation for realism and the talented artists who excel in it, the process is not something I find enjoyable. Part of the fun for me is not knowing ahead of time what a painting will become until it shows up on my canvas. I most enjoy painting when the finished product is unpredictable, even to me.

What advice would you give someone starting this project? Take risks! I was a little afraid to splatter the painting as I was happy with the way the poppies had turned out, but in the end, did what I felt would add life to the work as a whole.

The splattering is perfect. I was always informed that orange is the color that pops forward.
