What was your inspiration?
I was inspired to make this quilt by a beautiful range of Japanese-type prints at my local quilt shop. After making the quilt top I found that I had bought far more fabric than I needed, so decided to use it to make a slightly different back, rather than purchase more fabric to back the quilt. I intended to quilt it "in the ditch", as I hadn't done any other type of quilting before, but realised that the ditches on the front and on the back would not be in the same places, so that would have spoilt the whole effect. I therefore took my courage in both hands and vermicelli quilted (stippled) all over the centre.
What are you most proud of?
I astonished myself by managing to complete the entire project on my tiny, 36-year-old Frister & Rossmann Cub 4 sewing machine, including the quilting. I now have a much larger Pfaff, but will never part with my dear old faithful F&R machine, which is small and portable enought to take to quilting classes with me.
What advice would you give someone starting this project?
It'll take you a while as it's like making two quilts, but take your time and enjoy making it!
