Instructions
Cast on 44, divide to four DB needles, knit in a circle about 9 cm, then start gusset: Left hand, 4th needle, knit 7, add one, knit two, add one, knit two. Knit twice around, third round fourth needle, knit seven, add one, knit four, add one, knit two - and so forth until you have 14 stitches added for the thumb. Separate them on a stitch holder, add two then picking up work, so now you have 11 s each needle again. On the right hand mitten you do additions at the beginning of needle one, k2, add1,k2,add1,k7 etc. Finish the palm by knitting another 10-11 cm, then start reductions: 1st and 3ed needle, k1, k2tog, 2nd and 4th, k8,k2tog,k1. Follow this pattern every other row until you have 7 s left, then every row, finish last 8 by pulling yarn through.
Pick up cuff another 44 stitches (I found easiest to use a lot thinner needle for picking, but knit with the same as the rest). Knit this side as the mirror image to the other (left hand mitten gets its right hand equivalent here) Before you finish this end, after separating stitches for thumb and continued at least 6 cm, finish both thumbs by picking spared 14 plus another 4, (6-6-6 on needles), finish when thumb almost completely covered by knitting 2tog end of each needle until 6 s left, pull yarn through. I do knit the two ends together at their thumb and palm tips at the very end, but you can finish the closed double mitten as a long tube, it can still easily be draped over itself as one side becomes lining to the other, just requires a little bit of wiggling for best fit.

Manos del Uruguay Silk Blend
What was your inspiration?
I love mittens for warmth, but single mittens can let the wind through, so I usually carry two pairs with me. A-ha! problem solved here, and the Manos Silk yarn is just fantastically luxurious and soft against my skin, and I love the hand dyed colors, too.
What advice would you give someone starting this project?
If you make the cuff a bit longer, you can fold over the lining for some added interest
