Type of item: Accessory

For: Women

Style: Classic, Holiday, Casual, Traditional

Materials

cotton fabrics, interfacing

What was your inspiration?

The fabric itself was my inspiration. I used every square inch of it I had. With a busy print like this, I thought a simple design was best.

What are you most proud of?

The top stitching close to the edges help make the bag stand straight and will help get it back to shape after laundering.

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

An extra heavy stabilizer in the bottom in addition to the heavy interfacing throughout the bag helps to keep the bag upright when loading.

I made the bag without a pattern. I had only half a yard of the fabric, and one edge of the piece had been used for another purpose. So I cut the red-green print into two pieces, approximately 18 inches long by 14 inches wide. These pieces were interfaced and seamed together at the bottom. The side pieces were cut 15.5 high by 5.5 wide, interfaced and stitched to the front and back. An ultra heavy stabilizer (Peltex 70) was hand tacked to the bottom inside. Then loops were attached to the lining and the bag was lined using pieces cut just a fraction of an inch smaller than the outside pieces, the top was bound and handles made and attached. One could make it whatever size you wanted - or as in this case, whatever size the fabric you had on hand allowed. The purpose of the loop is twofold. 1. If you are using the bag to shop for groceries, the bag stands weakly on its own, but as soon as the bagger starts loading it unevenly, the bag may tip. The loop provides a spot for the bagger to put over the hook most have in their bagging area to steady the bag until the weight gets more evenly distributed and fully stands on its own. 2. If you are using the tote as a purse, you can use a key clasp over the loop to keep your keys from getting lost in the bottom of the bag.

The bag is beautifully made, did you make the pattern yourself and also what is the loop for ?
