Learn It

This project was made as part of a Craftsy course:
The Couture Dress »

Instructions

Fitting is the most difficult step so far.

Difficulty:

Category: Sewing

Type of item: Clothing

For: Women

Style: Traditional

Materials

Fashion Fabric: Handwoven Raw Silk (Nepal) Underlining: Silk Organza (US) Lining: Silk crepe de chine (China)

What was your inspiration?

I had bought the fabric 2 years ago and had not come across the right project for it ... and of course Susan's inspirational course.

What are you most proud of?

Perservering with the fitting. Being patient and not rushing or taking short cuts. Matching stripes in the center mid-drift with a random stripy fabric.

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

This project is immensly time consuming and specialist materials take time to arrive if you have to order from overseas. Take it slowly and enjoy doing each step as perfectly as you can manage.

not yet .... I'm finishing a sleeveless version in similar fabric I made for my aunt ... I think I am nervous of the sleeves, which is where it is up too, I keep finding other projects are a higher priority. Still I must finish by 14th Dec for work xmas party.

Beautiful fabric choice and so interesting the way you have chosen to use the grain of the silk to add even more interest. This muslin seems to fit you very well, but look forward to seeing your next photos when you post them.

I love this. I used some red crepe fabric that I had had for years. It is a good dress to sew with some special fabric! Thank you for sharing. I wil post pictures soon. I can't upload fom an iPad.

Thanks everyone for your nice comments ... I did reply to each but the replies have dissappeared??? This was only my 2nd fitting of 4 ... but I have been lazy to make photos. I let it out further round the hips and took in a little at the waist and upper bust and fitted an elbow length sleeve. I have also altered the skirt to be more A line than straight. I was so pleased with the effect of the bias pieces I wanted to share it even tho the dress is nowhere near finished. Alot of bias pieces require alot more fabric and I took a long time laying out on both the organza and fashion fabric to fit it all on. I am now awaiting my ham to move onto the machine sewing stage. Britta - my belief was that the desision on which pieces were on the bias needed to be made at the muslin stage as grain affects the fitting.

Love that fabric! I never liked that pattern much, but I think it's really going to work on you. The dress is going to feel great on with that crepe de chine lining.

Beutiful fit! Great to see an exampel of so many bias parts, I am still considerig whether to have my pinstripes in the skirt straight or biased.

Wow, the bias panels look amazing in that fabric choice. Great job! I can't wait to see the final dress.
