The first quilt I ever made »

Instructions

This was a welcome quilt for my first niece, it was also that first quilt I ever made and a lot of learning happened while making it!

Category: Quilting

Type of item: Functional

For: Infant/Baby

Style: Mod, Funky

Materials

Colourful cotton, lots and lots of it!

What was your inspiration?

I wanted to make my niece to be a welcome quilt, and I am a firm believer in learning being a part of everyday life, right from day one. So I planned this quilt to have: soft, velvety, shiny, spotty, starry, checked, plain and flowery poly-cotton fabrics in almost every colour that the little 'un would need to learn the names for. The reverse side has a looped poly-cotton fabric with is incredibly soft and the little (now almost 3 years old) girl still sleeps with it tucked under her chin as a comfort blanket.

What are you most proud of?

Finishing such a large project. Quilting stich-in-the-ditch for the first time ever, although I have now changed to top-stitching along seams as it's easier. .

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

Don't be afraid to rip out stitching and start again. I redid lots of the stitching on this quilt and I'm very happy with it.
