Learn It

This project was made as part of a Craftsy course:
Craftsy Block of the Month 2013 with Laura Nownes »

Difficulty:

Category: Quilting

Type of item: Home Decor

For: Unisex

Style: Funky, Cute, Mod, Casual, Whimsical

Materials

Cotton fabric & thread

What was your inspiration?

Rainbow Sherbet.

What are you most proud of?

Everything squared up as I went. I had no problem with the 4 inch borders. The block trimmed out at 17 1/2" with no problem.

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

I chose to do Option A for this quilt and Option B for my floral quilt. I did not pair the D fabrics. Instead I used HSTs for the D pieces. I was concerned the polka dots would become too busy and overwhelming after using option B for this large block in my other quilt. In the end the 4" borders tone down the size so much I think the center looks small. For now I'll leave as is. When it comes to assembly I may change it - either replacing the border with setting pieces or changing the border fabric. For now its wait and see.

Thanks Beth! These come from the class kit. I was reluctant about them in the beginning but I'm really enjoying all the polka dots!

Jean I love seeing your blocks and am so glad I decided to purchase the Craftsy fabric for this BOM. Just got it yesterday, now to find the time to start with all my other quilt projects I have going on. As for sinking your sewing machine, greatest thing I have ever done. My sewing table is a wood top executive desk. We moved the center drawer elsewhere, took off the rollers, and DH cut a whole to fit my machine in the top of the desk. Put a bracing underneath for the machine, and fixed the cut out part so it could be put back in if I ever need the whole desk top. I'm one happy camper now! JanJo in Reno

Hi JanJo! I'm beginning to regret selling my old office furniture and buying a new cabinet. Its work surface has a rolling brace underneath that prohibits any cutting out. I may have been able to do the same thing you have but I'm not so sure my hubby is that crafty (sorry for the pun). Sure look forward to your new blocks!!

I didn't realize you were making 2 quilts! Duh! They are both going to be so fresh & bouncey! I like them both! So different than mine. I love all the variety. As far as your sewing machine - you are sinking it in a cabinet for ease in FMQ?

Jean, are you taking Leah Day's class. I am getting more and more confidence to do FMQ. I am learning even with my learning challenges.

Well mpac - the answer is yes and no. I'm enrolled. Have viewed some of the lessons. But I need a flat work surface and I'm having trouble coming up with a solution. I just found the EPS I want to use to make my own. Now its an hours drive this weekend and some cutting and figuring to get my machine "sunk". I have good intentions. I'm just having a hard time proceeding:D

Jean, great job. I like both options and used B for mine. You have really lost and way outgrown the nebie status. You blocks are wonderful.

I really like both these blocks. Amazing how different the blocks look just by changing the fabrics.

Also note- the two blocks together go into two separate quilts.

Note- I chose to do Option A in my floral quilt and Option B in this one. I'm not completely happy with how this one came out, especially after putting it in the design grid, but I'm growing concerned I'll run out of polka dot fabric.
