Pattern info for this project can be found here:

Instructions

Just throw it all together and have fun

Difficulty:

Category: Quilting

Type of item: Home Decor

For: Children

Style: Cute

Materials

5 1/2" fabric squares & 4 1/2" batting squares

What was your inspiration?

I wanted to do a practice run as I plan on making one with some material I purchased last week. This was made up of entirely "left overs". 112 squares in total - Finished quilt measures 36 1/2" x 32"

What are you most proud of?

I used up some of my scrap stash!

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

Easy to do and very forgiving.

I just cut out the fabrics for a flannel rag lap quilt for my mother who is in assisted living. I used plain and print to intermingle and plain for the back with a cheap flannel for the inside instead of batting. I previously made my great grandson a rag quilt and he loves it.

Love making the rag quilts and was thinking about making one with flannel inside so it is a little lighter, you've just talked me into doing it - thanks :)

I made one using this idea out of old Jeans I collected. I didnt use batting in the middle tho, just 2 pieces of jeans. I used 7 inch squares so after a 1 inch seam on all sides the squares were 5 inches. I used random colors and it turned out really neat. Takes lots of waashing and drying to get it to fray up nicely, I recommend a few washings and dryings at a laundry mat. It will shed alot. Spread the word to your friends that you want all their old jeans and shop at yard sales.

Hi rghandcdh :) I didn't have a pattern just made it up as I went along after reading up on rag quilts. I used 5" squares of cotton fabric and cut 4 1/2" batting squares. To make each square I place the backing fabric wrong side up put a batting square on top (making sure it is centred) then placed the top fabric square with edges matching the backing fabric. I then sewed on the diagonal (from corner to corner). When I had finished all of them I sewed squares together (backing sides together so that the raw edges of the seam show through to the front) to make rows then sewed the rows together. Take a small pair of very sharp scissors, being carful not to cut into the sewing on the seams and snip at 1/4" interval all the seams. Place in a washbag and wash in the washing machine with water temp according to batting type. Hang to dry and done is done! :) I hope you get the idea from what I have written, there is loads of info on the net just "google" Rag Quilts. Any other questions I would be happy to try and help. Happy Sewing.

these rag quilts are great for seniors in nursing homes. they like them over their lap since they are usually cold. I made several for my grandkids and used up all the extra scrap for the nursing home. They love them.

I take my rag quilts to a commercial laundry so I don't get all the lint in my washing machine, which doesn't have a removable filter. The special rag quit scissor is a life-saver for the hands.

I do the same thing. My quilting bee suggested it when I made it. I used heavy flannel on my quilt w/batting in between. It is so heavy, but it's for my hubby and he loves it. Took forever to wash & dry it commercially. I put it through the wash process twice.

I have made 3 of these several years ago. Have the pieces cut to do several more and have even stitched on some of them. This is a great project to do when you feel like making something and don't want to have to match much or worry about points getting lost in the seams. Just have to remember to seal it in a pillow protector to wash and dry it the first time!

I did one for my adult son with Patriots Football flannel and plaids on the back of denim. I used denim that I bought at thrift shops in the largest sizes that I could. Made for a nice mix of faded shades. He loves it and it's very warm for the winter (especially football) season!

I make mine out of 3 squares of flannel instead of using batting. I also make them so they are the same on both sides. It just means more snipping

With flannel you really do not need the batting-it makes it almost too heavy. I used another layer of "junk" flannel and it worked great.

I've made about a dozen of these as charitable gifts for sick children. I use flannellette for all three layers and they are so cozy and warm. I recommend using a special walking foot on your sewing machine because of the fabric thickness. I use a double needle for stitching the layers together because if you accidentally clip your stitch line when snipping the seam allowances for fraying, you'll have a backup stitch line. I also recommend the special rag quilt snipping scissors available at Michael's, which work 100% better than other scissors for this type of snipping, also very easy on the hands. Have fun making your own!

How do you get the ruffly look of the edges?
jhof50519 on craftsy.com
Sep 22, 2011   Flag as inappropriate
Snip the seams every 1/2inch (be careful not to cut into the stitching) then wash in the washing machine :)
Chris Porter on craftsy.com

You have to carefully snip the edge of the seam allowances and then wash it. It will ravel nicely. Be careful not to get to close to the stitching though.

I have made hundreds of rag quilts. My fabric choice is flannel. Need to wash and dry it about 4 times to get rid of most of the lint after clipping. I have also increased the size of the squares to 9 1/2 inches. For a lighter feel, don't use batting or you can use muslin. Have fun!

When I was a child my mother always made quilts with pieces from clothes we had outgrown or worn out.i think of all the changes I've seen in my lifetime. What we once thought of as necessity is now called 'crafty" .I guess it just proves that life really is a circle.

I made several of these quilts and sold them during an art and crafts fair. The ones people liked the most were the ones with baby prints, cat prints, and dog prints. I am always looking forward to how they will look when finished

I used 100% cotton gingham. It is the first rag quilt I have made but I do believe flannel is good. Try googling Rag Quilts made from (insert your chosen fabric here). :)

I cut the squares for these projects when I am cutting up the remainder of a piece of fabric-I just whatever size squares I can and just put them into piles and them sort them to what ever project will use that size square. This way, when I am ready to sew-no cutting needed! :)

I use flannel, which is perfect for rag quilts. After assembling the quilt with the 1/2" seams showing on the right side of quilt, clip each seam allowance every 1/4" to seam line, This takes an hour or more, depending on size of quilt. Next wash quilt in washing machine using detergent as usual, then dry in dryer. viola, the seams are fluffy.
