I made one using an ulgy flannel for the batting, a great way to use fabric you will not use for anything else. It turned out great, nice and warm for here in Canada.

This is lovely....what kind of stitch is used? I'm assuming it's by hand.. I started one going on 16 yrs ago...teaching my 4 and 5 grandaughters the hand work..they were doing so well....Then the wreck happened, robbing all of us future quilting...then about 4 yrs later, my house burned, taking with it some fabrics I'd had forever....then I lost my grandaughters and no longer could take them under my disabled wing...I hope someone in their new lives were able to pick up the needle and thread, teaching them the arts that seem to be dying....just like myself..

So sorry for your tragedies. Perhaps you could purchase material and make one to donate to a worthy cause in memory of your precious grandchildren. I hope you find comfort and sunny days ahead.

I am so sorry for the tragic situations you have suffered. Maybe it would be good to pick up some fabric and start one so you could donate to a worthwhile charity (there are many -- kids with cancer, senior homes, donation for basket raffle for someone in need, etc.). We also make them for our local hospitals. It would probably be very good therapy for you. Prayers.

Nice job. I made one for my son..woodsman prints. He loves it. I also added what I call a foot flap out of fleece...He is tall and always has trouble keeping his feet and chest covered at the same time. The foot flap keep his feet covered and the quilt anchored. Keeps the feet warm and he gets the full benefit of the length of the quilt to cover up to his chin.

These rag quilts are the best ~ kids love (and some adults) them, I have made several different sized blocks. Made some with a variety shapes into 13 inch blocks. On one rag quilt that had eight inch squares I added a wonky heart on a few of the squares that had inch seams that were clipped the same as all the spares; receive a lot of awes. These quilts have become my grandchildrens favorite. I use flannel front and back, tried one with batting and it was too heavy and bulky.

I agree, I don't use batting either, just flannel front & back. Funnily enough, on my first grand-daughter's quilt I added hearts to alternate blocks with clipped seams too. That was in 2003 and still looks as good as new despite still being used regularly. :o)

I love making rag quilts, Have done them in double flannelette and with cotton top and flannelette bottom. Done them with wadding and without, so simple and effective. I snip as I go and just love them..

This little quilt looks very organized... when I made one at Christmas time for my grandaughter ( flannel ), four layers of flannel and one of warm and white, the squares were hard to sew evenly and a 1/4 inch seam was impossible for me, so I measured and used 5/8 inch seams, junctions were sometimes difficult and so was sewing on the binding. How come mine looked so messy and yours looks so neat?

I have made several rag quilts and use a 1/2 inch seam, also make the batting an inch smaller than your blocks.
Yesha on craftsy.com
May 09, 2012   Flag as inappropriate
As the seams all have to be clipped to achieve the "raggy" effect, I was to use 1/2 inch seams. I don't bind raggy quilts, just stitch all the way around the quilt using the 1/2 inch allowance and then clip all around the edge so that it ruffles just like the seams. Hope this helps. :o)
Yesha on craftsy.com
May 09, 2012   Flag as inappropriate
PS: Make that "I was taught to use ... ". Re the thickness of the seams: I use flannel top and bottom WITHOUT any wadding. This makes them especially soft & snuggly - particularly for babies & small children.

I made one with cotton on both sides and flannel as the middle squares. It seemed to be awfully stiff. What did I do wrong? Maybe next time skip the flannel in the midle?

Try washing it a couple of time at the laundry mat. If you do it at home it may plug up your washing machine and dryer due to the shedding to make it fray.

I like(prefer) flannel front and back 9.5 sq batting in middle cut 8.5. and a 1/2" seams. Cotton also works well. Using sharp sharp sharp scissors to clip if essential. There are special scissors for clipping rag quilts but a bit expensive unless you are making lots.

I've made these rag quilts, but don't put batting in the middle. I just use a backing square and a top square. Sew an "X" on it to keep it together, then sew all blocks, wrong sides together, including a 1/2 inch all the way around the quilt. Make your cuts as normal and wash and dry. They are still quite warm without the batting. So easy and fun!

my absolute favorite quilts...to make, to own and to give away....so warm when made out of flannel. the Fiskars snippers made special for rag quilts are a great investment.... have done squares and triangles and a combination of both...pretty well unlimited except by your imagination. Very forgiving when you make mistakes as well. also love your quilt.

I made a rag quilt for a shower gift a few months ago. I'm now in the process of making 2 more. For the 1st one , I used 2 layers of flannel with cotton batting in the center cut a bit smaller than the squares. I sewed the "X" through all 3 layers. When everything was done and washed, I found that the batting had "bunched " in quite a few places. This time I'm using 3 layers of flannel . I will still do the "X" as I like the look of "quilting". I also found that , when washed & dried , I had a lot "pilling" on the flannel and had to use a lint remover to get rid of it. Does anyone have a tried & true method of washing & drying these to prevent "pilling" and also to retain the color. I found that my yellows faded quite a bit .

When I was buying my flannel backing, the lady told me to wash the quilt with 1/2 cup vinegar to help the colors "hold". Not sure why, but it did help the colors stay brighter.

I made a rag quilt useing used denim, various shades, alternating with red types of materials, The backing was of a darker shades of denim. I used the pockets from the jeans to put in a little secret pocket for boys favorite items. My grandson just loved this quilt. Twin size and the secret pocket. It turned out awesome. I did not use a middle layer as it was too heavy. 6" squares work great.

I've made several of these and we love them but my only caveat is that you should ALWAYS take it to the laundromat to wash the first time. The flannel sheds so much lint that it literally backed up my wash line into the sink. Beware!!

I've made these using 6" squares. When using batting you want it to be 1" smaller all around the at the fabric. Chain sew them with a big X across them. When sewing together all the raw edges come to one side. I use a 1" seam as I want lots of ravel, and use a close stitch, or stitch 2 times. Have a comfortable set of scissors to clip all the seams. Wash multiple times to get lots of ravel.

There are lots of free tutorials on the internet. Just type in "how to make rag quilt". Since you quilt alot, go ahead and play around with designs and patterns. I have made them with fleece backs, with borders and binding and with mix of cotton and flannel. If mixing cotton and flannel if you do not pre-wash the flannel the cotton squares will come out a little wrinkly-but it still looks OK. Enjoy!

I have made many of these quilts...mostly for new babies. You can use almost any material for them. Not sure about sweaters though.... I have seen nice ones made out of old jeans as well. It just has to be a fabric that will give you that good fringe..I usually will take to the laundramat to wash after and especially for the dryer.. Creates ALOT of lint! Have sharp little scissors for the clipping. I love these quilts! Great for beginners!! I use flannel and no batting.

I've made one with cotton and one with flannel. They both turned out great. The cotton one had a couple of prints that were more tightly woven than the rest and didn't ravel as nice. I thing you will have the same problem with knit and rayon. You probably won't have that nice frayed look.
