I had 12 nine patch blocks left from a previous project. They felt a bit boring but having read about cutting and inserting contrasting strips I thought I would give it a go.
What was your inspiration?
A combination of images and instructions from various books on modern quilting
What are you most proud of?
That otherwise pretty boring nine patch blocks now have a pretty contemporary look.
What advice would you give someone starting this project?
You may need to cut the finished block much smaller than you expected. The wider the inserted strips the more you may have to trim the block. Sounds strange but I found this to be the case when I wanted the first insert to line up on each side of the second insert. The crosses in the border panels do not line up because I was not able to trim the strips. I had already cut them the finished size before deciding to insert more strips. Several of these crosses do not line up very well. - Not that it really matters in this project.
