Instructions

Then I started the process of making all the binding in blue and white for the celtic designs. That took forever and then I had to put the designs down on the background fabric to sew them. I did use fusible web on the back of the designs to hold it down until I could sew it. The top row and the bottom row are hand applique designs I found that seemed to go with the theme.

Difficulty:

Category: Quilting

Type of item: Functional

For: Other

Style: Romantic

Materials

Cotton fabrics for all the pieces and hand applique pieces. As well cotton binding for all the celtic designs which I hand made myself. The king size quilt took me 2 years to complete but my daughter and her husband were very glad to get it as a wedding gift.

What was your inspiration?

My daughter is really into celtic and blue is her favorite colour and I could not find a pattern that I liked. I started to research celtic designs on the web and in books and decided to take all of the designs to a professional copier and have him make all the different size pictures I had fit into a 12x12" block.

What are you most proud of?

Getting all the designs from various sources and thinking to use a professional copy place to size all the pieces. That save me alot of time but did cost about $80.00 dollars which I felt was well worth the work involved.
Making all the binding for the celtic designs was very monotonous but I pushed through and got it done.

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

Plan it out very carefully. Keep good records of what you do as you go along and buy the binding if you can find the right colours.

Thanks Tova, this was the first time I tried this as well. My daughter loves blue and celtic designs and I wanted the contrast so I decided to go with the white. My son was the one who suggested to do one block with the background white and one with a blue background. I don't know why I didn't think of that. Family affair but a surprise for my daughter and her husband.

Yes, I did do the quilting myself. I worked it as a quilt as you go project and then had a friend use her longarm machine around the outer border.

Some of the patterns came from a book called "Celtic Quilts A New Look for Ancient Desings" by Beth Ann Williams and the rest came from various veb pages I found pictures of celtic designs. As not all of the designs were the same size I had to take them to a printer to have them resized to the size I wanted.
