What advice would you give someone starting this project?

This is a very easy design for a beginner, with no matching necessary except where block corners meet. It is a great pattern for scraps. I made it with 35 nine-inch blocks. After adding borders, it finished to approximately 60 x 80 inches. I noted the sizes that I cut the pieces of each block on the second photo above. For each block you'll need two of the smallest piece in the same color as that block, but since these colors jut into the next block, you'll need to lay out the whole quilt top on a design board to see where each of these small pieces need to be stitched. In addition, you'll need 12 pieces of the smallest piece cut in the border fabric for what is shown as the white jutting into the pieces around the edge on my sample. Some of the small pieces jut into the first border. The first border finishes to 2 inches wide so it needs to be cut 2.5 inches wide. After you stitch the 35 blocks together, it is easy to measure how long you need to make each strip of that first border before you add a colored piece to correspond with a puzzle piece. I'd suggest you do the sides first before you do the top and bottom first borders. Then add a second border as wide as you like, again adding the sides before the top and bottom.

What great way to use scraps! I have an autistic daughter and plan to make this for her using soft colors and adding weights. Thank you for the idea!

This really has impact! Thank you so much for the instructions - I think I might give this a whirl sometime. It looks so much more complicated than it actually is, and shouldn't take too long, once the layout has been sorted. Excellent!

Hi AllThatPatchwork. How did I miss seeing this beautiful quilt until now? This is gorgeous. I'll have to study up on your directions. Do you think I could do this one? For the moment, i'm just mesmerized by it, enjoying it. It's awesome, and looks difficult. Great work. Love, love, love the color combinations.

This looks like fun! And it's so much easier than it may appear at first glance.
