There is not a pattern for this per se...it is simply 20 charms I used from two different Charm packs...I used 9 for the front, 9 for the back and two for the pockets...with some scraps I had left over I used a one inch strip (1" x 2") doubled to make the tabs to hold the handles. Once the 9 squares are pieced together (3 squares x 3 squares - they measure about 5 " square ) I cut a piece of fusible fleece and ironed it to the backside. I did this to both for the front and for the back. I then quilted the two different pieces. Next, I placed them on top of each other - right sides together, and sewed around the sides and bottom...then I sewed a corner square - on each side to give the bottom a little depth. Next, I Flipped it right side out and pressed it. I made the tabs to hold the handles and sewed them to the center of the front and back. Then I made the pockets ...taking two of the charm squares, one of them, I sewed a piece of muslin to the right side sewed around three sides and flipped it right side out and pressed it . The second one, I folded it right sides together and sewed the short sides and flipped it right side out and then placed it over the larger pocket - making sure the raw edges lined up. I sewed it to one of the pieces of lining fabric - centering it (sewing the bottom- upside down , then flipping it up and sewing the sides and topstitch the bottom. ) Next, I placed the other lining piece on top of the one with the pockets - right sides together - and sewed the sides and bottom. Next make a corner square (like on the tote previously) to each side. Place the lining inside the tote - wrong sides together - lining up the sides and seams - then baste around the top - being careful with the handles (make sure they are facing down). Next add the binding and you are done! The final measurements are ~ 13" x 13" and 2" deep. There is not a pattern for this per se...it is simply 20 charms I used from two different Charm packs...I used 9 for the front, 9 for the back and two for the pockets...with some scraps I had left over I used a one inch strip (1" x 2") doubled to make the tabs to hold the handles. What was your inspiration?
I saw this on line from the Moda Bake shop - Julie from jaybirdquilts has a tutorial on there to make a coupon clutch - using Moda charm packs and with the left overs she make a tote - and so, I thought I would try it too...and this is it.
What are you most proud of?
How cute it came out and it was done in a few hours!
What advice would you give someone starting this project?
I call this a fun, fast and easy project - so, have fun and enjoy it!
I absolutely love this!! Can't have enough bags!! I would like to make it a bit bigger, could I use 4x4 squares instead of 3x3 and apply the same instructions??
The squares used are actually from charm packs - they measure ~5" square...when i say 3x3 I meant 3 squares by 3 squares...sorry if that is misleading..I am not the best when it comes to writing directions
Verrrry, very cute! At first I thought the shape was like a bucket but then saw the picture of the tote when it was "flattened." Some of the directions are a tiny bit confusing such as putting a square in the corner (not sure I remember exactly how it was worded). I'm not sure what you are doing with that square of fabric (which you mention again later). Thanks for sharing -- real cute & real inspirational!
yea- well - I am not the best on doing patterns/tutorials - I was merely giving a quick synopsis..the square corners - are once the sides are sewn - fold the ends (seams together- on top of each other0 and sew across - about 1 " - then it makes the squared corner once it it turned right side out. I hope this helps
