What was your source for this quilting project?
Online Photo or Website
Name of website or photo Paper-pieced bird
What materials did you use? About 1/4yd blue fabric, 1.25yds brown (for lining and bottom, about 1yd of the awesome striped fabric I found at joann's, then white and blue from the stash for the paper-pieced bird
What are you most proud of? The pebbling around the bird. Oh man was that hard, especially the white thread on the white background; it was so hard to see on my little domestic machine. I'll never do pebbles that small again! but I'm glad I was able to buck up and try out free-motion quilting.
What advice would you give someone starting this project? I definitely recommend trying out paper piecing if you've never done it before, you can get some amazing results. Here's a good tutorial that I used on youtube just to see what it was like: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xv2gKMx9CCM you don't really need the special rulers she says to use, I just eyeball 1/4" (or less) and snip off the extra fabric with scissors. Also if you choose to get fancy with the free motion, definitely pay attention to what level your hands are on. I don't have a fancy desk to drop my machine down into, so my hands are a little higher than they should be when working for a few hours, and I could really feel it in my shoulders afterward!! boosting myself up by sitting on some pillows really helped out. Also if you don't want to turn your paper pieced project into a wall hanging, a bag is a great choice! My mom loved this as a gift :)
