For: Home

Style: Mod, Classic, Funky, Retro / Vintage

Materials

Quilting weight cotton, batting, pearl cotton embroidery floss, sewing machine

What was your inspiration?

I was looking for a small foot stool for my family room and could not find what I wanted in the stores, so I made my own!

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

This project can be customized to your style and home decor. Have fun with different printed fabrics. This is a great project to use up left-over strips from other quilting projects as well as using up left-over batting scraps.

Love it and have all my pieces ready but don't know how to attach the rounds parts (top and bottom) together with the side part...

Here is what you will want to do to get the pouf sewn together: Step 1 Stitch the short side of the middle section into a tube right sides together, but leave an opening for turning. Mark the middle section length into quarters by placing pins on the top and bottom. Quarter and mark the round top and bottom with pins. STEp 2 On one side of the middle section match pins then pin remaining area between the pins to ease in the gap. Stitch around entire circle. Repeat for bottom circle. Turn right side out. STEP 3 Repeat in the same manner for the muslin lining. Turn right side out. Follow the rest of the directions in the PDF instructions for filling the pouf. Good luck, Sharon

Sharon, the muslin for the inner bag was not included in the materials list. How much should I get?

The yardage is there in the instructions, "3yards of muslin for the backing and inner bag of pouf." so, you will use some of the muslin to back the top, bottom and side pieces when quilting and the rest of that 3 yards will be used to cut the pieces for the inner pouch.

what a great way to use up all those bits that sit in the scrap box. not saying thats what you have done. but I certainly give me an idea of what to do with all those bits I save. I have quite a collection of bits. NEVER EVER THROUGH OUT ANY MATERIAL. I learnt my lesson well and truly., You see I was making a table mat and found that I was one triangle short of being able to complete the project. I scurried through my scrap box, aha I found the right piece. and as they say the rest is history.

I did make that pieced Pouf all from scraps! It makes you feel good to make something from nothing. Have fun! - Sharon

what an excellent idea and the children wont hurt themselves on it either. you could stuff it with fibre fill instead of 'beans' making it nice and soft.

Did you use a liner for the beans in the bag before filling it? Where are bean bag beans found? MJ

The instructions have the full details, but yes, there is a liner. Bean bag beans are readily found. I got a 100 liter bag for $15.00 at Kmart.

I have found that beans for the bags to be quite expensive. A good idea when cleaning the bag, is to put you plug in your bath or tub put all the beans in there, and you scoop them all back up when you want to put it all back together. another idea is to nip the zip toggle off so that little ones cannot get the beans out. as a child can choke if they get one lodged in their nose or throat.

This is a reply to Caraline above. Originally I did stuff my prototype Pouf with fiber fill, but did not like it, it was too bouncy, like bouncing ball and not comfy to sit on and it didn't have the nice shape as with the beans. Finding bean bag beans fill is very ease, it is inexpensive too. My only complaint of the bean bag beans is they are very light weight and make the classic bean bag sound, but it is a small concession for the nice end product

What did you fill it with? It seems really stout yet soft for comfort. Lynda Falley

Sharon, I really like the look of the pinched-edge and the running stitch accent. Much better looking than the usual bean bag selection.

Thanks! It doesn't take long to do the edge, and makes all the difference to the final look.

You will find full set of instruction with the link to my web site for a free download. The Pouf pieces were hand quilted before assembling them into the Pouf and the pinched edge treatment was stitched with a running stitch before filling the Pouf with bean-bag beans.
