Learn It

This project was made as part of a Craftsy course:
Quilting Quickly II: Patterns, Techniques & Tips »

Difficulty:

Category: Quilting

Type of item: Functional

For: Home

Style: Casual

Materials

Puttin' On The Ritz layer cake pack by Moda in gray; 100% Cotten fabric for backing; polyester batting.

What was your inspiration?

I took the course by Jenny Doan to get ideas and inspiration and learn a thing or two. I really liked the X's and O's design, and decided to make it with the Puttin' On The Ritz fabric line.

What are you most proud of?

I am proud that after a year I FINALLY finished it! Since it was a quilt for me, I kept putting it at the back of the line of the projects I had going on so I made myself shut up, sit down, and quilt away until it was done. I also like the fact that without meaning to, your eyes are drawn to the black and white squares with the actual Moda fabric acting as the background. Funny how just changing the colors a bit changes the whole look of the quilt. Another thing - I am trying to get better at machine-binding, and this time, I did the best job of it so far. I did a simple zig-zag stitch to finish the binding, but the challenge here is to keep a straight, even stitch so it looks good on both the top and bottom. It's not perfect, but I'm getting there!

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

This is a great quilt for a beginner. Fabric choices are limited to your imagination. Jenny Doan gives such good, clear instructions that she makes you want to start right away on any project she's explaining, so go ahead, and start! Just make sure you don't keep putting it off for a year, because when you finish it in a few days, you'll be upset you didn't take a couple of days extra a year ago! LOL LOL

This may be my fav of all your quilts. Love the colors and fabric. Just bought some steel grey fabric.....I may have to go with a similar color scheme now that I see this. Nice job and congrats on finishing!

This is absolutely stunning! I love the subtle colors and the crisp quilting. You indicated that you started with a layer cake. Did you cut it in quarters to create 5-inch squares, or did you use the full 10-inch blocks? I guess the second question would be: What is the finished size?

Thanks for the nice words, VHMolter. I used the complete 10 inch blocks, so the final dimensions are about 56 by 65 [I have bad luck with 1/4inch seams, so I up mine to 3/8, hence the smaller final dimensions] I use it as a bed topper for my cats to roll around in and leave all their shedded fur on, instead of on my 'good' duvet. LOL

It is so intersting how just a simple color block change can give such a different look to your quilt isn't it?

Love the palette. You know, I'm a machine-quilter 100% (and a former big-time dressmaker), but I LOVE hand sewing binding. Go figure....

Sue P., I also enjoy binding by hand but usually I do it for gift quilts. if I am making a quilt just for me or because I am bored then I practice my machine binding. Not perfected yet but way better than my first project I machine finished.
