What was your inspiration?
My inspiration for this was the yarns themselves and my tween age daughter. Stuck between those childhood and teenage years, my daughter seemed to want to hold onto the things she loved about being a child, yet wanted to dress more in the style of the years she was entering. So making another poncho like the ones she loved to wear as a child, yet adding the look of a skirt that so many teens were wearing at our church seemed like a good match for her. Add to that our study of Geography and the land of Egypt and the look of the poncho was decided. It would look like the necklace of a Egyptian princess, but with my daughter's favorite...fringe.
What are you most proud of?
I'm most proud that I was able to bring a favorite from her childhood into her young teen years in one simple outfit. Add leggings and a simple girls' t-shirt and she looks very stylish.
What advice would you give someone starting this project?
Start the poncho first. It is simple connected chain stitches, edged with a double crochet stitch on the bottom and neckline. Add fringe and you are finished. It is crocheted in the round from the bottom up, decreasing one stitch each row.
The skirt takes longer and was done in 3 parts. First the skirt portion, which is double crocheted. The waist band was done separately and is ribbed to allow her to stretch it out to get it on, then it was simple stitched onto the top of the skirt. The ruffle was chained stitched on after the first two portions were done, and finished with a double crocheted edging.
