Instructions
Cast on 82 stitches for 18 months to 2 yrs and 90 for adults. Do 8 rows of knit one, pearl one, with round knitting needles size 5. You also can do 2 knit and two pearl, however you wish. Decrease to 81 stitches by knitting two together and Change to No 8 round needles for beginning of plain knit. I like to knit two plain rows of the dominant color before starting any patterns and then I follow a grid. I like to have two rows of a solid color between the hearts to form a frame and two rows of plain knit between the frame, but anything you wish can be done at your preference. Start the decrease after about 22 or 24 rows from the beginning ribbing. Switch to the size 6 double pointed needles to decrease. You can decrease by doing a knit and pearl ribbing for about 4 rows, and then knit two stiches together to decrease, and then pearl two rows, and knit two stiches together to decrease, until about eight or six stitches left. Then end by pulling about 5 inches of yarn through the remainingg stitches. Pull tight and knot the end tail and weave it in to your work on the wrong side. Anothe decrease I like is; decrease every 10 stitches and then next row, every 9th stitches, then next row 8, next row 7, etc. until you get to the end with only one stitch left. Slip stitch and pull about 6 inches of yarn through the last loop and make a knot. Use the tail yarn to either tie a tassle on the top or pull yarn tail to the inside and use it to secure the pom pom. Any knitted hat instructions can be used for a hat like this; its the grid work that makes the pattern.

What was your inspiration?
I was inspired to update the instructions from all the nice comments. I had no idea this would become so popular, since I made so many of these hats in the past and no one asked me for the instructions before. Sometimes these patterns just come to me and I make the hats different everytime. I don't really follow any instructions anymore. I usually just try on the hats on my grandkids to see if they fit!
What advice would you give someone starting this project?
Be sure to use charts on grid paper for your designs.
