This project was made as part of a Craftsy course:
Thread Art »

Instructions

The key to color seems to be in the layering. Don't be afraid to add more and more until you get the color and shade you need.

Difficulty:

Category: Quilting

Type of item: Home Decor

For: Other

Style: Romantic, Whimsical

Materials

Cotton fabric and thread, iron-on stabilizer and batting, colored pencil

What was your inspiration?

My granddaughter, on a play day in the park. She was actually picking wildflowers (weeds), but this random shot was very compelling as a subject.

What are you most proud of?

It's not a bad likeness. ;) The fabric was a piece gifted to me by my sister, so very special to me. I wanted to also highlight that, so decided to outline and color in the roses (a favorite subject of mine) as well. They are a little distracting, but the piece as a whole pleases me.

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

Just follow Lola's great instructions. Step 1, then step 2 ... and keep going until you decide you're done! There are no mistakes -- you can correct and improve lots of things with colored pencils -- who knew?

I don't think I could do anything as clever as that! I love the strong colours and the texture you've given to the skin of the little girl's face and arms. I really am SO impressed! Congratulations on a real work of art!

I didn't think I could, either! On thinking about it, just choose a fairly uncomplicated subject that really speaks to you. Then follow Lola's great directions, coloring and shading just like you did as a child. It is so freeing! If you don't like it, just color over it! The blending of different colors gives so much depth.

Thank you. I tried to remember certain rules of color: warm colors draw closer, while cool ones recede. I don't know if I applied the principles exactly, but I'll claim artistic license! ;)

Thanks. I think it turned out well, but I'm really a beginner. I just followed Lola's directions, and everything was fine. There were some tense moments for me, but trusting and doing I conquered them!

Yes. Just keep at it. The colors really developed slowly in my case. I was afraid I would hurt the fabric, but not so. You can do it!

Really great picture! I agree with you about the layering as well. I'm also using a very faint batik for some of mine and that adds lots of depth. Great job on this!

Now the dilemma: Bind it or frame it?
LindaDad on craftsy.com
Aug 24, 2012   Flag as inappropriate
Mount it. I love to take a deep (3") canvass for oil painting, either foil or paint the canvass and attach the piece to the canvass with either glue or hand stitches. They can be tough to get through the canvass, but look great if you want a rustic look. I learned this technique f;rom Jane Dunnewold.
