Pattern Info

Pattern info for this project can be found here:
McCalls 5499

Instructions

Used pattern for body and designed sleeves which are removable just below the first ruffle so she can wear to Disney World in June and remove them when she gets too hot.

Difficulty:

Category: Sewing

Type of item: Costume

For: Girls

Style: Romantic, Cute, Holiday

Materials

Crushed taffeta, glittery satin and leftover gold trim.

What was your inspiration?

After seeing the movie "Brave" my granddaughter, Abby, wanted to dress up as Princess Merida for Halloween. She loves for me to sew for her and appreciates what I make for her.

What are you most proud of?

The sleeves that she can remove when it gets hot. That it is a one of a kind and that it looks so good on Abby.

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

Stick with it and start early. I had a number of ideas of how to alter the pattern and some worked, some didn't and I did some ripping out and starting over again. Don't get discouraged.

How did you manage with the sleeves? I'm intending on making the same outfit with the same pattern but am at a loss as to how to manage the sleeves.

The bottom portion is removable since she will be visiting Disneyworld the end of June and it will be hot so I cut the sleeve off at that point like a regular sleeve. The cream underneath has elastic with small snaps that attach to the upper portion and is sewn to lower portion. The strips also have snaps (they are all the clear ones and I spent a lot of time handsewing!) that attach to upper portion to. I measured her arms and drew it out on paper to be sure I had it right. Good luck!
