There have to be adequate spacers between the square beads in order for them to lie flat at the front center of the necklace when worn. I didn't like the look of having them strung too far apart, so it took some experimentation to find the right amount and size of beads and spacers to suit me. What was your inspiration?
The square cushion Prehnite beads inspired me hanging on the display rack of a local bead shop. They were so pretty, even though I really didn't need any more beads, but I had a groupon in my hand for $20 off a $40 purchase. I could see them in the necklace just as it is assembled and now I wish I had bought 2 strands, because this one is sold and I have a friend who wants one also.
What are you most proud of?
What I cannot take credit for -- the beauty of the Prenite gemstones themselves.
What advice would you give someone starting this project?
When I first started making beaded jewelry with semi-precious gemstones, I didn't understand why anyone would want anything other than 8 mm round beads because they are so easy to work with. Now I look for unique gemstone shapes and sizes because 8 mm rounds just don't always show the true beauty and character of the gemstone to its best advantage. Step outside your comfort zone and try something different!
