Three skeins spun from the same fibre.
Left: spun from the fold (woolen), navajo plied
Centre: worsted spun (not stripped), 2 ply
Right: thick & thin, spiral plied
You can see how the navajo plying (left) concentrates the colours a lot more as compared to the 2 ply barber pole effect (centre). The thick n' thin... that's just a whole different ball game.
NB: Spinning space dyed top from the fold introduces some barber poling right into the singles so you get some in the plied yarn, too. If the singles had been spun in the same way as the centre yarn, there'd be even less barber poling in the left pic.
This was my first attempt at spiral plying. I didn't have any fine handspun singles to ply around when I DID have a teacher handy, so I grabbed a fine 8/2 weaving yarn I had handy and plied around that. Good for learning the technique, not so much for a very useful yarn. :P
