What advice would you give someone starting this project? When you sell commercially, your price has to be low enough for their store to make a profit. Plan on them at least doubling the price they paid to you. I say this with love.......it is hard sometimes to let go of our artistic EGOS when it comes to wholesale pricing. Crochet, like any art form, is time consuming and we become emotionally attached to our projects. If you get caught up with worry about pricing your time into the project.....you might never land a retail store. Selling to retail stores may not be for you. Selling on consignment can also have it's benefits. The Retailer will not get stuck with merchandise they cannot sell and YOU will get public Exposure (Free Advertising) for your item(s). I limit my consignments to 90 days. Most retailers will either place the item on clearance after 90 days, OR, return the item to you. When the latter happens, it can be heartbreaking.........try not to take it personally. There is nothing wrong with a good reality check! If it happens frequently....then you definitely need to improve your item(s) or find stores which FEATURE your type of work. This is called "Niche Marketing"........................................
