Instructions

Because I wanted to tie in the cranberry red color, I added a 1/4 inch flange of the red between the inner and outer border.

I machine quilted it on my Bernina but I did find that the bulk at the intersections of the four blocks caused me to avoid that area.

It was a fun quilt to make because it seemed to surprise me---I thought it was going to look a certain way and it ...

Materials

I was determined to use fabrics from my stash, and I was able to for almost all the quilt except both borders. Yeah!

What was your inspiration?

A dear friend is coming to visit and I've always wanted to make her a quilt. Her color scheme is brown and earth tones so I dug through my stash to see if I could find fabrics that would coordinate and contrast with each other. I wasn't too sure of my selection at first, especially since I'm not really a 'brown-earth-tony' kind of gal. However as the quilt came together I was genuinely surprised to see how the colors met together perfectly.

What are you most proud of?

Adding the flange to pop out the red. I'm so glad I took the class and that I used (for the most part) long lost fabrics in my stash!

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

If you aren't sure what colors to put where, print out copies of the quilts you like and study how the maker used her fabrics. I printed out a block from three different pinwheel quilts just to see how they contrasted their fabrics. It helped me a lot because I had a hard time 'picturing the end result.

If you think it will take you a long time, do what I did....I timed out how long it took me to paper-piece, trim and press 4 squares = 30 minutes. I then grabbed a half hour when I could and may slow but steady progress.

Beautiful workmanship on your Pinwheel Polka quilt! Your machine quilting is exquisite! I'm so glad you included so many details about making your quilt - so great that you were able to mostly use fabrics from your stash, The little red flange adds a really nice touch, too. I know your friend is going to absolutely love this quilt!!
