Quilting: Pink Log Cabin
32 kudoz

Pink Log Cabin

Learn It

This project was made as part of a Craftsy course:
Craftsy Block of the Month 2013 with Laura Nownes »

Difficulty:

Category: Quilting

Type of item: Functional

For: Infant/Baby

Style: Classic, Whimsical, Romantic

Materials

cotton fabric, polyester batting, trilobal polyester thread for quilting

What was your inspiration?

I loved the offset log cabin block and the strip piecing method introduced by the teacher, Laura Nownes. I added an extra row of logs to make 8" blocks. I learned the quilting from 2 other Craftsy courses: Leah Day's and Cindy Needham's. I got the nerve to do free motion quilting on a small machine from Leah and from Ann Peterson, another Craftsy teacher. I.LOVE.CRAFTSY!!!

What are you most proud of?

I've learned to be very precise in my piecing -- every little variation has a big effect on the outcome, and this quilt turned out nearly perfect. But I'm most proud of the quilting I did on this project. This is the first biggish quilt I've done with lots of free motion quilting (I used to settle for stitching in the ditch and adding a few squiggly lines here and there). I must say, this quilt is really gorgeous!

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

Be very precise about your 1/4" seams and trimming and pressing after each round of "logs." It's possible to skip these things, but your finished product will probably be messy and disappointing.

thanks for your encouraging comments, everyone! somehow, all the elements came together to make this a wonderful quilt. I made it quickly, in a week's time, to give to a baby. in a way, I hate to part with it -- but if I'm such a fabulous quilter, I should just make another one!

Your right... it is gorgeous! You've inspired me to "go for it" and not be so intemidated by free-motion quilting! Love the orange touch in there with the pinks, very nice! :o)

This is beautiful...I hope I can get my nerve up to give this a try. I am currently signed up for both of those classes but struggling to make time to really dig in and get them finished. Thanks for sharing.

Beautiful:) Love the added row and the curve you achieved with the setting, and the pinks are nice. The quilting is fantastic. I may look into those quilting courses you mentioned. Great job.
