Materials

The baskets are made with long leaf pine needles inside the coils. The stitching and open work is done with raffia.

What was your inspiration?

Years ago we were in Eastern Washington in the Fall. There were so many Ponderosa pine needles on the ground that I had to try and make something. I had an old book that taught this coiled method and kept working at it for years. Starting the coil is hard so I tend to keep on going once getting started. It makes for some pretty big projects.

What are you most proud of?

The time it takes to make a really big pine needle basket is a little daunting. I guess I'm proud that I stuck with it long enough to make some nice big ones.

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

Start with really good books and start small. Give yourself time for the hand/mind coordination to kick in. It may take a few baskets but once that happens, you'll feel a real sense of accomplishment.

I have made several baskets from FL long leaf pine needles. Yours are superb. Mine have been on a smaller size, but you have inspired me to make a larger one.

These are beautiful. You have gone beyond the crafter into the realm of artisan! What an incredible skill. I have never seen anything like it! It doesn't look like something that I would want to try to tackle personally, but I would love to learn more about this. I have never heard of this before. You should be very very proud of your work!

Thank you! This type of basketry is so much like sewing that it has always appealed to me. Instead of patience, it feels like indulgence when I allow myself the time to make one.
