Using a plastic container such as a small butter container or sour cream holder or even a small zip loc bowl and lid, with the sharpie draw a circle the same size as the bottom of the container, then do the same thing for the lid twice (you will have three circles)...now cut down the smallest circle 1/4 inch. A simple way to do this is to tape two pencils together and draw on the edge of the circle with one, and inside the circle with the other, then cut on the marked line. Next do the same thing to one of the larger circles. Next cut batting the size of all three circles. Cut a square of fabric print at least an inch larger than the smallest circle with batting sandwiched between the fabric and card stock. Take the opposite corners and pull tight to the back side of the card stock and glue it with hot glue. Now do the same with the other two corners. Now making gathers, carefully glue the rest of the fabric around the circle. NEXT take the lid and glue the largest piece of card stock to the underside of lid giving it a solid surface...take the polyfil or cotton and make a puff circle to go on top for pin cushion and wrap solid fabric loosely around it, allowing extra inch on each side for turning under...cut square and glue much the same way the circle was glued earlier leaving one opening for stuffing to desired tightness before final gluing...NEXT wrap smaller of the two large circles same way small circle was made but using solid material and glue it to underside of lid to cover where you glued the fabric down and giving it a finished look. NEXT take batting and wrap around the outside of container. I wrapped mine twice because I used a thin cotton batting. Glue as you wrap it and keep it just under the lip of the container and cut it flush with the bottom of the container. NEXT measure 1 inch past bottom of bowl up to top, then inside bowl and add 1 inch and use this measurement with the print fabric. This will give you enough fabric to line the inside of the container. Wrap fabric around container and add about half inch to an inch to turn under for a seam and overlap, then cut the fabric. Now making sure you only have your 1 inch overhang at the bottom, glue the fabric over the batting that you have already added to the container. Next tuck the fabric inside the container and glue the hem down where the fabric meets at overlap...make small gathers as needed and glue fabric to inside of container bottom. NEXT take the smallest circle you have already made and glue with soft finished side facing up into inside of bottom of container to cover up where you glued down the fabric and give the container a finished look. NEXT using a blind stitch, sew the top to the container just far enough that it is attached because if you sew too far it will be hard to open. NEXT glue a piece of trim around upper edge of container for decoration. NEXT take seed beads and sew onto lid for sprinkles (I waited til this step to make sure it looked even instead of doing before I glued it on). NEXT glue a decoration in center of pin cushion such as a puff or flower. Using a plastic container such as a small butter container or sour cream holder or even a small zip loc bowl and lid, with the sharpie draw a circle the same size as the bottom of the container, then do the same thing for the lid twice (you will have three circles)...now cut down the smallest circle 1/4 inch. What was your inspiration?
My neighbor had asked me about making a cupcake pin cushion as I have been teaching her how to quilt. I researched many options online and decided I wanted to make a compilation of several I have seen and add ideas I also had from covering baskets and other crafts over the years. She made the yellow cupcake and I made the pink. We had a great time together making the cupcakes.
What are you most proud of?
I just enjoyed sharing the craft with my neighbor and the end product of course is always a great reward.
What advice would you give someone starting this project?
Be careful with the glue gun since it is used alot in making this project.
